Op-Ed by Dr. Taniyaa Bakshhi: Why Multipurpose Skincare Is Replacing 10 Step Routines

 

For years, the beauty industry has convinced us that more steps mean better skin. Cleanser. Toner. Essence. Serum. Booster. Ampoule. Mask. Moisturiser. Oil. Sunscreen. The routine became longer, and somehow we believed that length equaled effectiveness. In the UAE, where extreme climate and routine fatigue are real concerns, we are seeing a growing preference for simplified, multi-use skincare over complex, step-heavy regimens. This is not because people care less about skincare. It is because they are tired of confusion. The climate here is extreme and contradictory. It can be 45 degrees outside and aggressively air conditioned indoors. Skin feels oily and dehydrated at the same time. Add ten products to that environment and it is no surprise the barrier becomes compromised.

Over layering does not strengthen the skin. It often overwhelms it. When too many active ingredients are used together, the skin struggles to regulate itself. Sensitivity increases. Breakouts become more frequent. Pigmentation worsens because the barrier is no longer intact. In my practice and conversations with consumers, I see this pattern repeatedly. People are not failing their routines. Their routines are failing them.

Multipurpose skincare is emerging as a response to this fatigue. A well formulated product that can hydrate, calm, and support healing reduces the need for constant layering. It simplifies decision making. It lowers the risk of irritation. It makes consistency easier. Take aloe vera combined with calendula. Aloe hydrates and supports moisture retention. Calendula helps calm redness and promote skin recovery. When thoughtfully formulated, this combination can act as a daily moisturiser, a soothing treatment for irritation, and even a preparatory layer under makeup. One product, multiple functions.

This is not about cutting corners. It is about returning to skin logic. In harsh climates like the UAE, the priority should always be barrier health. If the barrier is strong, the skin can better handle sun exposure, pollution, and fluctuating humidity. If the barrier is weak, no serum in the world will compensate for it. 

There is also a lifestyle shift happening. The modern consumer in the UAE is wellness driven. She works out, eats clean, values balance, and is more ingredient aware than ever. She does not want a shelf full of products she barely understands. She wants safe, effective formulations that fit into real life. She wants skincare that she can repurchase without hesitation and use daily without fear. Multipurpose products make this possible. They reduce clutter. They reduce cost. They reduce anxiety around whether something is too strong or too trendy. Most importantly, they encourage loyalty. Skin improves when you stay consistent with what works, not when you constantly switch.

I often say that your skin thrives on loyalty, not experimentation. Ten step routines look impressive on social media, but real skin health is built through simple habits repeated daily. Cleanse gently. Support the barrier. Protect from the sun. Nourish consistently. That is the foundation. Multipurpose skincare is not a downgrade. It is a sign of maturity in the beauty conversation. It reflects a deeper understanding that skin does not need complexity to thrive. It needs stability, hydration, and respect. In a region where climate stress is constant, fewer steps done well will always outperform many steps done inconsistently. Less is not laziness. In skincare, less done intelligently is strength.
